Local Tip
Melbourne Central, on the corner of La Trobe and Swanston Streets, has a Travel Money Oz store on its ground floor. On trams and trains, a UK contactless card now does the job of a myki.
Where to change money in Melbourne
Melbourne's walk-in bureaux sit in the CBD grid, and Elizabeth Street alone has three chains within a few blocks: Crown Currency Exchange (no. 45), Travelex (no. 102) and Travel Money Oz (no. 108). Hours were listed in October 2026.
- Travel Money Oz, Melbourne Central - Ground floor, Shop 139A, 211 La Trobe Street. The centre lists 10:00 to 19:00 on weekdays (21:00 on Thursday and Friday), with shorter weekend hours.
- Travelex, 102 Elizabeth Street - Open 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Wednesday, 09:00 to 20:00 on Thursday and Friday and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends, per Travelex's store page.
- Crown Currency Exchange, Midtown - Kiosk K001, 246 Bourke Street, at street level behind the Telstra shop; the City of Melbourne's visitor guide also notes a foreign exchange kiosk here. Crown's other CBD counter is at 45 Elizabeth Street, near Flinders Lane.
Changing money at the airport
Melbourne Airport lists Prosegur Change as its exchange operator, with every counter in Terminal 2, the international terminal. Departing, you can use counters at check-in rows M and J, at the Duty Free entrance, at Gate 6 and at Gate 2, which is open 24 hours. Arriving, there is one in the baggage reclaim hall (05:00 to 23:00) and two on the arrivals ground level. Most others open from 05:00 or 06:00 to 23:00, as the airport listed in October 2026.
Prosegur says online orders can be collected free at its airport branches.
ATMs and cards in Melbourne
The airport lists Prosegur cash machines across Terminal 2, Armaguard's ATMx machines in Terminal 1 and a Prosegur machine in the Terminals 3 and 4 food court near Gate 11. MoneySavingExpert points out that a foreign cash machine may charge its own fee on top of anything your UK bank takes, so even a fee-free travel card can cost you something at the ATM. If a Melbourne till or ATM proposes converting the total into sterling, say no and stay in Australian dollars, as MSE advises.
Paying for transport in Melbourne
Melbourne's network has gone over to tap and go. Bank cards have worked at myki-enabled train stations since 7 June 2026 and on every tram since 21 June, and all Melbourne bus routes were due to be switched on by 26 July. Keep to the same card, phone or watch when you change between train and tram. If a bus reader shows no Visa or Mastercard logo, use a myki; concession fares also still need one.
Victorian fares are half price until 1 January 2027, and the state puts the full-fare daily maximum at A$5.70 (normally A$11.40). SkyBus is excluded: its City Express runs to Southern Cross Station every 10 minutes, with returns at A$21.70 each way.
Good to know
- SkyBus's ticket kiosks at Melbourne Airport are card-only; tickets are also sold online, in the SkyBus app and at the stop.
- Spend your Australian coins before flying home: Crown Currency Exchange says it does not exchange coins, though it collects them for overseas charities.
