Local Tip

In Turkey only banks, the PTT post office and licensed exchange offices may trade foreign cash, so walk past jewellers and anyone changing money in the street. If a card reader or cash machine gives a choice of pounds or lira, pick lira and let your own bank convert it.

Where to change money in Bodrum

Under Turkish rules, foreign cash may be bought and sold only by banks, the PTT and licensed exchange offices (döviz bürosu): a Finance Ministry communiqué bars unlicensed trading, and Hürriyet Daily News reported tighter checks in tourist areas in February 2026. None is named, as no individual office could be checked against two sources.

  • Licensed exchange offices (döviz), Bodrum town centre - Check for the licence and a board showing both buying and selling rates, and ask for a receipt. Rates differ from office to office and the lira moves quickly, so compare two or three on the day before you hand over pounds.
  • İşbank Bankamatik cash machines - İşbank says some of its machines, those that take cash deposits, turn euro, dollar and pound notes into lira with no card needed. Its other machines pay out lira on a UK card in the usual way.

Changing money at the airport

Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) lies 37 km from Bodrum town and 17 km from Milas, according to DHMİ, the state airports authority. Its facilities table for the airport lists no banking services, and no official page confirms an exchange desk or a cash machine in the terminals, so bring some lira or withdraw in town.

DHMİ names Havaş and MUTTAŞ coaches, a municipal dolmuş and taxis from the airport's taxi cooperative. MUTTAŞ, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality's transport company, runs line 48-24, picking up at Bodrum's bus station in Torba (Torba Otogar) and in Güvercinlik. From 18 May 2026 it charges TRY 270 between the airport and Torba Otogar and TRY 220 to Güvercinlik, VAT included. The line's page says credit cards work on every vehicle and seats cannot be reserved; times are planned around flights. No official Havaş or taxi fare was found.

ATMs and cards in Bodrum

A bank cash machine is the easiest way to get lira. İşbank says any fee on a foreign card is charged by your own card issuer rather than the machine's owner, that its screens show the fee details before you go ahead, and that your bank's daily limit applies. Ziraat Bank's machines and card readers show a foreign card's total in its own currency, at a rate Ziraat sets; İşbank says this conversion is usually the worse deal, so choose lira.

Which? (March 2026) gives the same advice for shops and restaurants: choosing pounds lets the retailer fix the rate, while the local currency leaves it to your card network. It also suggests a high street bank's machine rather than a stand-alone one, and fewer, larger withdrawals to keep fees down.

Paying for transport in Bodrum

Dolmuş, the shared minibuses linking Bodrum town with the peninsula's resorts, can be waved down anywhere on their route. Turkey Travel Planner (2024) and Lonely Planet (2025) both describe dolmuş in Turkey as cash only, with the fare handed forward to the driver, but payment in Muğla province is changing: MUTTAŞ's fare tables for Bodrum routes now list electronic-card prices, and a 2025 guide to Fethiye, in the same province, says minibuses there no longer accept cash. Carry a contactless card and some small lira notes.

Taxis are easy to find in town; no official fare was found, so ask the price before you get in.

Good to know

  • Holiday visits need no visa for British citizens, for a maximum of 90 days within any 180. The FCDO also asks for a passport that runs for at least 150 more days from your arrival date, with one empty page; check gov.uk before you travel.
  • Keep small notes: Turkey Travel Planner asks dolmuş passengers not to hand the driver anything above TRY 50, as change is short.
  • Lonely Planet says private drivers in Turkey expect a sizeable daily tip and that guides are tipped too; it gives the amounts in lira, which date quickly with inflation.
  • If a boat trip or bar quotes a price in euros or pounds, ask for the lira price and pay that on your card, so the rate is not left to the seller.

Bodrum travel money FAQ

Where is the best place to exchange money in Bodrum?

A bank or a licensed döviz office, after comparing posted rates; a UK card in a bank cash machine is often simpler. Only banks, the PTT and licensed offices may trade foreign cash, so avoid jewellers and street dealers.

How much is the bus from Milas-Bodrum Airport to Bodrum?

MUTTAŞ line 48-24 charges TRY 270 to Torba Otogar and TRY 220 to Güvercinlik on fares in force since 18 May 2026. You can pay by credit card on board, but you cannot book a seat. The airport is 37 km from town.

Should I pay in pounds or lira in Bodrum?

Lira. When a card machine or ATM offers pounds, that is dynamic currency conversion: İşbank says it usually costs more, and Which? points out that it lets the seller choose the exchange rate.
