Local Tip
Think twice before using the independent cash machines at Palma airport: Which? suggests machines at bank branches instead. Pay in euros, never pounds, and on TIB buses around Majorca tap a contactless card, which TIB says works out much cheaper than cash.
Where to change money in Palma
Spain's tourist board says bureaux, various banks and most hotels and travel agencies change money, but we could not confirm a named exchange shop in central Palma from two sources. For most UK visitors, a card in a bank-branch machine in town is simpler than swapping notes.
- Best and Fast Change, Palma Airport (PMI) - Aena lists three desks: the baggage reclaim hall on floor 0 (08:00 to 23:00), and check-in on floor 2 and boarding module A on floor 1 (both 09:00 to 21:00). Hours may shift with flight schedules.
Changing money at the airport
Aena lists cash machines from Euronet, La Caixa (four of them) and Change Group across the terminal and car park. Which? suggests avoiding high-cost machines in places such as airports. If you need one, read the charge on screen: under Spanish rules the machine must state its cost before you confirm and let you stop.
EMT, Palma's city bus company, runs the A1 and A2 airport routes; the A1 goes to the centre at Plaça d'Espanya. A commercial guide, mallorca.com (updated 28 September 2026), gives the fare as EUR 5 cash and says a bank card works on board; EMT's own site would not load for us, so check at the stop. Since August 2025 TIB's Aerotib lines A11, A32, A42 and A51 have shared the same airport stop with EMT. Taxis are metered; we found no official tariff we could open.
ATMs and cards in Palma
Spain.info says paying by card, mainly Visa or Mastercard, is very widespread, though some places may want around EUR 10 before they take one. Euros are normally the only currency accepted, and cash still helps at market stalls and small bars.
The Banco de España explains that at another bank's machine your card provider may pass the owner's fee on to you, and UK banks often add their own charges, so check yours before you fly. If a card reader or cash machine suggests converting into sterling, say no and stay in euros: Which? notes that choosing pounds lets a local bank set the rate, often with a fee as well.
Paying for transport in Palma
Inside the city, mallorca.com puts an EMT single at EUR 2 in cash. Palma council has approved a rise to EUR 3, which the guide says was not yet in force in September 2026, so expect either price. Free bus and train travel in 2026 is only for holders of an Intermodal or Single Card, TIB says, so visitors still pay.
For the rest of Majorca, TIB buses, trains and the metro take contactless debit and credit cards. On a bus, each traveller taps in on boarding and the group taps out once on leaving; always use the same card or phone. TIB bills each day's journeys as one total the next day, your bank may hold up to EUR 20 to test the card, and not tapping out costs EUR 0.30 per person. Cash costs more, and drivers take no note above EUR 20.
Good to know
- Balearic tourist tax: the regional government's Illes Sostenibles calculator lists EUR 1 to EUR 4 a night from 1 May to 31 October, by type of stay (the top rate is for five-star hotels), and a quarter of that from November to April. Under-16s pay nothing, the charge halves from the ninth night, and 10 per cent VAT is added to your accommodation bill.
- No rise this year or next: the Majorca Daily Bulletin reported in August 2026 that a planned summer increase was dropped, and in September that the Balearic Government had left it out of its budget bill.
- Tipping is optional, says Spain.info, as service is included. In a TheFork survey of Spanish diners reported in August 2026, 63 per cent left under 5 per cent.

Palma travel money FAQ
Where is the best place to exchange money in Palma?
For most UK visitors, a card used in a bank-branch cash machine in town beats a desk. If you want euros on landing, order them at home. At the airport, Best and Fast Change has three desks; ask for the euro total before you agree.
How much is the bus from Palma airport into the city?
The EMT A1 runs to Plaça d'Espanya in the centre. One commercial guide gives EUR 5 in cash and says cards are taken on board, but EMT's fares page would not load for us, so check the price at the stop.
Is there a tourist tax in Palma?
Yes, the Balearic sustainable tourism tax. From May to October it runs from EUR 1 to EUR 4 per night by type of stay, a quarter of that in winter, plus VAT. Under-16s are exempt, and the government has ruled out a rise in its next budget.
Checked October 2026. Fees, fares and opening times change, so check locally before relying on them. Sources: Aena · Aena (press release) · Which? · Banco de España (Cliente Bancario) · mallorca.com (commercial guide) · Ultima Hora
