Local Tip
Unusually for a Greek island, Rhodes has a walk-in exchange shop: Onexchange on Ippokratis Square in the Old Town. Ask for its rate and compare it with a euro withdrawal on your UK card before handing over pounds, and keep a few euros in coins for the airport bus, whose driver takes cash.
Where to change money in Rhodes
Onexchange, a chain with shops in Athens, Thessaloniki and several islands, has two outlets on Rhodes: one in the walled Old Town and a summer desk at the airport. The airport operator lists the desk too, but the Old Town shop's details come from the company alone. Ask for the rate and any charge first.
- Onexchange, 17 Ippokratis Square, Old Town - The company gives opening hours of 09:00 to 22:00 from April to October and 09:00 to 15:00 from November to March; phone 22410 31847.
- Onexchange, Rhodes Airport "Diagoras" - In the arrivals area open to all, according to Fraport Greece's airport site. Onexchange states 07:00 to 24:00 every day from May to October and lists no winter hours; phone 22410 83058.
- Faliraki and Lindos - We could confirm no exchange office in either resort. Draw cash in Rhodes Town before a day out in Lindos.
Changing money at the airport
Fraport Greece, which runs Rhodes Airport (RHO), lists three cash machines: Eurobank's in the area open to all, Euronet's airside in departures and arrivals, and Cashflex's in the public part of departures. Only Eurobank is a Greek bank, so compare the charge each one shows.
The bus stop is between the old and new terminals, on a route run by RODA, the municipal bus company. Independent guides from 2020 and January 2026 give the fare to Rhodes Town as EUR 2.50, paid to the driver in cash; the older one puts the trip at about 35 minutes, ending a short walk from the Old Town walls. The municipality's taxi prices from the airport, for up to four people, are EUR 27 to 29 to Rhodes Town, EUR 31 to Faliraki and EUR 74 to Lindos, plus extras for heavy luggage and late nights.
ATMs and cards in Rhodes
Withdrawing euros on arrival is normally the easiest way to get cash. A Greek rule in force from 11 August 2025 made withdrawals free for Greek bank customers at every Greek bank's machine and capped third-party machines at EUR 1.50 for them. Protothema and Parapolitika both reported that foreign-bank cards are outside that cap, so a Euronet or Cashflex machine may charge a UK card more. Check the screen and expect your own bank's foreign-use fee as well.
If asked to pick a currency, say euros, so your card provider does the conversion. Since April 2024 a much wider range of Greek businesses, taxis among them, must accept cards, and taxis carry a sticker saying so on the rear right window. Keep some cash for small purchases.
Paying for transport in Rhodes
RODA, owned by the municipality, runs buses in Rhodes Town, along the west coast and to the airport; KTEL Rhodes covers most of the east coast, including Faliraki and Lindos. Both leave from the main bus station by the New Market. A January 2026 travel guide advises buying town tickets before boarding, from a kiosk, machine or shop; out of town you can usually pay the driver or conductor in cash.
We found no KTEL fares and no word on bank cards on board, so carry cash. From Rhodes Town, the municipal taxi list gives EUR 22 to Faliraki and EUR 67 to Lindos.
Good to know
- Tips are a choice, not a duty: round up or leave 5 to 10 per cent at a casual taverna (Revolut), and simply round up in a town taxi (Greek City Times).
- Bills sometimes include a couvert for bread and the table setting. That money goes to the restaurant and is separate from any tip.
- From April to October the climate resilience fee is EUR 2 a room per night in a 1 or 2 star hotel and EUR 15 in a 5 star hotel or big villa, dropping to EUR 0.50 to EUR 4 from November to March; a travel site says the January 2025 rates still apply in 2026.
- Hotels and hosts usually take the fee as you check out and issue a receipt just for it; ask when booking whether your price covers it.
