Local Tip
We could not confirm any exchange counter on Kos, so plan on paying by card and drawing euros, ideally from the Eurobank machine at Kos Airport rather than the Euronet or Cashflex ones. KTEL Kos tells passengers to buy tickets on the bus, so keep coins and small notes for the fare.
Where to change money in Kos
No exchange office on Kos is confirmed by two independent sources, and the airport's website lists cash machines but no exchange desk. OneXchange, which runs counters at several Greek airports, shows no Kos branch either. A card plus euros from a bank's cash machine is therefore the practical route; Which? cautions that stand-alone machines can charge extra.
- Eurobank cash machine, Kos Airport - In the part of the terminal open to everyone, according to the airport, next to a Cashflex machine; Euronet's machines are airside in arrivals and departures. Eurobank is the only bank among the three operators.
Changing money at the airport
Kos Airport (KGS) lists three cash machine operators on its own site, Eurobank, Cashflex and Euronet, and no exchange counter. However you take cash out, decline any offer to bill the withdrawal in pounds. National Bank of Greece's tariff of 1 October 2026 is a useful guide: it makes no charge of its own for a straight euro withdrawal with a UK Visa or Mastercard, but adds 9.5 per cent to the withdrawal when you let it switch the amount to sterling (12.5 per cent at airport machines it runs).
KTEL Kos publishes separate airport timetables alongside its island routes, and the municipality says buses link the airport with the island every day. Look at the timetable shortly before you fly. We found no official taxi tariff, so settle the price before a resort journey.
ATMs and cards in Kos
Cash still matters on Kos. In a 2026 European Central Bank survey covered by Greek Reporter on 20 August, 99 per cent of businesses in Greece said they accept it, level with Italy as the highest in the euro area. Bring notes for beach kiosks, small cafes and village tavernas around Kefalos, Pyli or Zia, and use a card in larger hotels and shops if you prefer.
In Kos Town, choose a machine attached to a bank. Which? says stand-alone machines often add premiums and that taking out everything at once saves on repeated fees; check your UK bank's own charge for foreign use before you leave. When a card reader gives you a choice of currencies, pick euros: in pounds the retailer sets the rate, which Which? says is usually worse than your card provider's.
Paying for transport in Kos
KTEL Kos runs the island's buses from its stop at 7 Kleopatras Street in Kos Town, with timetables for Kefalos, Kardamena, Marmari, Zia, Antimachia, Tigaki, Pyli and Mastichari. Its instruction is simple: pay for your ticket once aboard. The company announced new fares on 13 March 2026, but the prices were not readable on its site, so we give none; carry coins and small notes, as card payment on board is not confirmed. Its office at the same address opens on weekdays from 08:20 to 15:00.
Kos Town's municipal buses reach Psalidi, Agios Fokas, Lambi, Alikarnassos and Platani; we could not open a page with their fares. Taxis start from Akti Kountouriotou on the town's seafront.
Good to know
- Tipping: in a traditional taverna, rounding the bill up to the next euro or note is enough, says Which?; elsewhere add 5 to 10 per cent on top of any service charge already in the bill, or 10 to 15 per cent without one. Hand it to the waiter in cash. Bars do not expect a tip, and for taxis rounding up is plenty.
- Room fee: Greece adds a climate resilience fee for every room and night of a stay. It rises with the class of hotel or rental and is higher in the April to October season; AADE, the tax authority, shows it is still collected in 2026, so ask the property for the figure.
- Carrying EUR 10,000 or more into Greece, in notes or travellers' cheques? The FCDO says it has to be declared when you arrive.

Kos travel money FAQ
Where is the best place to exchange money in Kos?
We could not confirm any exchange office, so rely on your card and a bank's cash machine, such as Eurobank's at the airport. Take the euro amount and say no if the machine or a shop terminal suggests pounds.
How do I pay for the bus on Kos?
Buy your ticket on board: KTEL Kos asks passengers to do so. Fares changed in March 2026 and were not readable online, and card payment is unconfirmed, so carry small change.
Is cash still needed on Kos?
Yes, for the small things. Almost every Greek business takes cash, and buses, kiosks, village cafes and tips run on it, while larger hotels and shops will take a card. Choose euros if a terminal offers pounds.
