Local Tip

Paphos has few true exchange counters, so the cheapest way into euros is usually a bank cash machine and your UK card. Keep coins and small notes for the buses, which take cash only, and choose euros whenever a screen asks how you want to pay.

Where to change money in Paphos

In Kato Paphos and the old town (Ktima), bank branches and their cash machines do the job that exchange kiosks do in other resorts; we could not confirm any independent bureau from two sources. Visit Cyprus says every bank on the island changes foreign currency and publishes daily euro rates, so a branch is the place to bring spare pounds. Wise notes that hotels and the airport, with a captive market, charge more.

  • Bank of Cyprus branches, Paphos - Counters open 08:00 to 14:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00 to 14:00 on Friday, with no weekend hours listed; the bank's cash machines work around the clock, holidays included. An older Wise guide (2018) picks Bank of Cyprus as the first choice for changing cash brought from home.
  • Prosegur Change, Paphos International Airport - Prosegur's Cyprus website says it runs currency exchange and cash machines at both Paphos and Larnaca airports. Cyprus Mail's airport guide (September 2026) advises checking the rate and commission before you convert, so change only enough for the first day.

Changing money at the airport

Paphos International Airport (PFO) has exchange and cash machines inside the terminal. Airport rates tend to be weaker than in town, so withdraw a modest sum rather than changing a wad of pounds.

Two city buses serve the airport. Route 612 ends at the Tombs of the Kings station and covers the seafront hotel area of Kato Paphos, while the 613 goes to Karavella station for the town centre. A one-way ticket is EUR 2, or EUR 3 after 21:00, bought from the driver in cash, and luggage costs nothing extra. Land after the last bus and you will need a transfer: Cyprus Mail puts a taxi into town at EUR 35 to EUR 45 for a ride of 20 to 25 minutes. Kapnos shuttles link the airport with Nicosia and with Larnaca airport; for the Larnaca run, Cyprus Mail suggests budgeting EUR 18 to EUR 25, with a journey of two to three hours.

ATMs and cards in Paphos

Bank-run cash machines are plentiful in both Kato Paphos and the town. ATM Fee Saver, which tracks withdrawal charges, says most Cypriot bank machines add nothing for foreign cards and allow between EUR 700 and EUR 2,000 a time, and Wise also found on-site fees rare. Even so, read the screen before you accept, and remember that your UK bank may charge separately.

Visa and Mastercard are taken in most hotels, larger shops, sights and restaurants, and Visit Cyprus reports contactless at nearly all terminals. The same tourist board warns that many credit cards add around 3 per cent to overseas purchases. When a card reader or ATM asks whether to charge pounds or euros, pick euros: Which? explains that choosing pounds lets the retailer set the rate.

Paying for transport in Paphos

The Paphos Transport Organisation (OSYPA) runs the district's buses on its own fare scale, separate from the Larnaca and Nicosia network. Singles cost EUR 2, night journeys after 21:00 EUR 3, and a day ticket for Paphos district routes EUR 6.50; under-sixes ride free and children up to 12 pay half. These tickets are sold only on board, and Guide to Paphos, a local guide site, says cards are not accepted, so carry coins and small notes rather than a EUR 50.

For taxis, agree the fare before setting off and ask whether the driver takes cards. Ride-hailing apps may work in the district, though Cyprus Mail warns that cover can be thin late at night.

Good to know

  • Tipping is up to you. Visit Cyprus says hotel and restaurant staff appreciate it, and taxi drivers and porters welcome a small tip.
  • Many restaurants already add a service charge, so check the bill before leaving extra.
  • Bank counters shut at 14:30, or 14:00 on Fridays, and list no weekend hours, so do counter business in the morning.
  • Keep some euros in coins and notes for kiosks and buses.
  • Shops will not take pounds: Cyprus has used the euro since 1 January 2008.

Paphos travel money FAQ

Where is the best place to exchange money in Paphos?

At a bank on a weekday morning: every Cypriot bank changes foreign cash at daily rates. For most visitors a bank cash machine and a UK card, paying in euros, is simpler still; leave the airport desk for small sums.

Can I pay by card on Paphos buses?

No. Singles (EUR 2, or EUR 3 after 21:00) and day tickets are sold by the driver for cash, so carry coins and small notes. Save the card for meals, shops and attractions.

How do I get from Paphos airport to Kato Paphos?

Bus 612 runs to the Tombs of the Kings station through the seafront hotel area for EUR 2 in cash. A taxi costs about EUR 35 to EUR 45. If you land late, check the last bus first.
