Local Tip
Larnaca's airport is only 10 to 15 minutes from town, so take a small amount from a bank cash machine there and get the rest in the centre. Have coins ready for bus 425: since 3 August 2026 the driver sells cash tickets at EUR 2.70, or EUR 4.70 late at night.
Where to change money in Larnaca
Larnaca's seafront along Finikoudes and the streets behind it are served by bank branches and their machines rather than a strip of exchange kiosks, and no independent bureau could be confirmed from two sources. The tourist board says every bank changes foreign money and posts euro rates each day, so spare sterling is best taken to a branch on a weekday morning. Hotel desks will change cash too, but expect a weaker rate.
- Bank of Cyprus branches, central Larnaca - From Monday to Thursday the counters close at 14:30, on Friday at 14:00, and they open at 08:00; there are no weekend hours. The machines outside run 24 hours a day all week. Wise, in a guide from 2018, named Bank of Cyprus the best bet for swapping cash brought from home.
- Prosegur Change, Larnaca International Airport - The firm that, by its own account, runs currency exchange and cash machines at Larnaca and Paphos airports. Handy for a first coffee and a bus fare, but compare the rate and the commission, as Cyprus Mail suggests, before handing over pounds.
Changing money at the airport
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) lies about 5 km south of the centre, a 10 to 15 minute drive. Exchange desks and cash machines are in the terminal; airport exchange tends to cost more than a bank in town, so keep the sum small.
Bus 425 runs from the airport to central Larnaca, stopping at Finikoudes, and carries on towards the Dhekelia hotel strip. Under the fares in force since 3 August 2026, a cash single bought on board costs EUR 2.70 by day and EUR 4.70 between 21:00 and 04:00; a Motion card is cheaper per trip but has to be bought and topped up first. Taxis wait outside arrivals on Level 0 at all hours and charge roughly EUR 15 to EUR 25 to the centre, and Bolt also picks up here. Kapnos shuttles head for Nicosia, Ayia Napa and Protaras, and some connect with Paphos airport; Cyprus Mail puts that trip at EUR 18 to EUR 25 and three hours or more.
ATMs and cards in Larnaca
Bank machines in the centre and at the airport are the sensible way to get euros. ATM Fee Saver (2026) and an older Wise guide both report that Cypriot bank ATMs seldom add their own charge for a foreign card, but that is not guaranteed: any fee appears on screen before you confirm, and your UK bank's charge comes on top. When the machine offers to convert the withdrawal into pounds, decline and take euros.
Cards, Visa and Mastercard above all, are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and bigger shops, and the tourist board says contactless is available almost everywhere. It also notes that a typical credit card adds about 3 per cent abroad. Pay in euros at the till too; according to Which?, a sterling payment hands the choice of rate to the retailer.
Paying for transport in Larnaca
Larnaca's town buses belong to Cyprus Public Transport, which also runs Nicosia's. Drivers sell only one-way, rural and night tickets, paid in cash: EUR 2.70 for an urban trip, EUR 4.70 at night and EUR 0.70 for a rural leg. Day, weekly and monthly tickets valid in all cities (EUR 20, EUR 75 and EUR 225) come from sales offices, and the weekly and monthly ones need a personalised Motion card.
The operator's fare page says nothing about paying by bank card on board, so carry change. For Paphos, the simplest public option is a Kapnos shuttle from the airport; check its timetable before you travel.
Good to know
- Tips are optional: Visit Cyprus calls them a gesture that hotel and restaurant staff appreciate, and taxi drivers and porters are glad of a small one.
- If the bill already shows a service charge, there is no need to add more.
- Bank counters close by mid-afternoon, and earlier on Fridays, so leave bank errands for the morning.
- Only euros are accepted; pounds are no use in shops.

Larnaca travel money FAQ
Where is the best place to exchange money in Larnaca?
A bank in the centre on a weekday morning, since Cypriot banks quote daily rates for foreign cash. Most visitors will find it easier to withdraw euros from a bank machine with a UK card, turning down any offer to convert to pounds. The airport desk suits small sums only.
Is there a cash machine at Larnaca airport?
Yes. The terminal has ATMs as well as exchange desks, and Prosegur Change runs machines at its airport branches. Check the screen for a fee and choose euros if asked.
How much is the bus from Larnaca airport to Finikoudes?
Route 425 costs EUR 2.70 in cash on board, or EUR 4.70 between 21:00 and 04:00, under fares that began on 3 August 2026. The bus continues towards Dhekelia.
