Where to change money in Porto

Unicâmbio, a payment institution whose price list is filed with the Banco de Portugal, is the bureau we could confirm in Porto. It charges a flat sum per exchange, not a percentage, so one larger swap beats several small ones.

  • Unicâmbio, Rua Sá da Bandeira 7 - Open 08:30 to 19:45 on weekdays and 09:00 to 19:00 on Saturdays and holidays; shut on Sundays. Under the price list in force from 2 October 2026, changing pounds into euros here costs €2.40 above €25 (€1.20 below), plus 4% stamp duty on that fee.
  • Unicâmbio, Porto airport - Arrivals, floor 0, open 07:00 to 22:00 every day. Its fee is €4.81 above €20 and €2.40 below, plus stamp duty. It also handles VAT refunds for Planet Tax Free, Travel Tax Free and Tax Free ePay.

Changing money at the airport

Unicâmbio lists its Francisco Sá Carneiro counter in the floor 0 arrivals hall, open daily 07:00 to 22:00 as shown in October 2026. Land after 22:00 and you will need your card. Metro Line E (violet) starts at the terminal, one of the few stations where a bank card can be tapped. STCP buses 601 and 602 run to Cordoaria about every 25 minutes between 05:30 and 00:30, and night bus 3M leaves for Avenida dos Aliados hourly from 00:30 to 05:30.

ATMs and cards in Porto

Most Porto cash machines belong to Multibanco, the network run by SIBS. If your card combines debit and credit functions, Postal do Algarve warns that the withdrawal can be booked as a cash advance, with the charges that brings, so a plain debit card is the safer choice. If a Porto shop or machine proposes a bill in pounds, refuse: MoneySavingExpert finds the card's own conversion usually the cheaper one.

Paying for transport in Porto

Andante is the shared fare system for Metro do Porto, STCP buses, CP urban trains and UNIR, priced by zones crossed, not by mode. A blue Andante Azul card costs €0.60; load zone tickets, which from 1 January 2026 cost €1.40 for Z2 (valid one hour) and €2.30 for Z4 (1 hour 15 minutes), or an Andante Tour pass at €7.75 for 24 hours or €16.55 for 72. Validate when you start and at every change. A contactless bank card also works on marked validators at nine Metro stations, among them Aeroporto, Trindade, São Bento and Campanhã, and on STCP line 500: each tap costs a Z4 fare, capped at €7.75 a day. On other STCP buses, drivers sell a €2.50 single-journey ticket for cash, MB WAY or contactless.

Good to know

  • Card tapping only counts if you start at one of the listed stations or on bus 500, so from anywhere else carry a loaded Andante.
  • Riding an STCP bus without a validated ticket can be costly: STCP says the minimum fine is 100 times the €2.50 on-board fare.

Porto travel money FAQ

Where is the best place to exchange money in Porto?

Unicâmbio is the bureau with listed Porto counters: Rua Sá da Bandeira 7 in the centre, closed on Sundays, and the airport arrivals hall, open daily 07:00 to 22:00. Its flat fee for changing pounds is €2.40 in town but €4.81 at the airport, plus stamp duty, so the centre is cheaper.

Partly. Bank cards work on marked validators at nine stations, including Aeroporto, Trindade and São Bento, and on STCP bus 500. Each tap costs the same as a Z4 ticket, with a daily cap of €7.75. Starting anywhere else, you need an Andante Azul card loaded with tickets.
