Local Tip
FOREX says it has no shop or cash machine at Oslo Airport, so if you would rather swap pounds over a counter, wait for its shop at Jernbanetorget 1, by Oslo S, where the Flytoget airport train stops.
Where to change money in Oslo
FOREX Norge, licensed by the financial regulator Finanstilsynet to deal in currency, runs five Oslo shops. The two most central are below; neither opens on Sundays.
- FOREX, Jernbanetorget 1 - At Oslo S, where Karl Johans gate begins. Hours: Monday to Friday 08:00 to 21:00, Saturday 09:00 to 19:00. Ruter's customer centre, which sells travel cards, is on the same square.
- FOREX, Karl Johans gate 2 - A few steps up the main shopping street. Hours: weekdays 09:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:30 to 18:00.
Changing money at the airport
At Oslo Airport, Avinor says currency is changed at a Loomis office at ground level in the arrivals hall, open 06:00 to 22:00 daily. It serves only people flying to or arriving from somewhere outside Norway, wants a passport or national ID card plus travel details, and stops at NOK 25,000 a day (NOK 100,000 a year). Cash machines are in the arrivals hall, straight after security, on the pier to passport control, on pier north (C gates) and beyond passport control; some also exchange currency. Avinor's page carries no date and was current in October 2026.
ATMs and cards in Oslo
Visit Norway warns that post offices and some supermarkets turn down foreign credit cards although they accept debit cards, so carry a debit card too. When an Oslo card terminal or cash machine proposes billing you in pounds, say no and keep the kroner total: MoneySavingExpert notes that conversion done on the retailer's side often comes out dearer than your card's own.
Paying for transport in Oslo
Ruter's adult single for zone 1 (Oslo) costs NOK 46 and is valid for 60 minutes on buses, trams, the metro, ferries and Vy trains within Oslo and Akershus. Buy it in the Ruter app, which takes cards and Vipps, or put it on a NOK 50 travel card from Narvesen, 7-Eleven or Mix kiosks or Ruter's centre at Jernbanetorget. Trams and the metro sell nothing on board; buses and boats do, but only for cash, with no notes above NOK 200 and at a higher price. Flytoget, the Airport Express train, leaves every 10 minutes, reaches the centre in 19 and lists NOK 276 for an adult single; under-16s ride free.
Good to know
- The Foreign Office rates the risk of petty theft as small, but names Oslo's airports and railway stations as the likeliest spots, so keep wallets zipped away while buying tickets.
- Avinor adds that if you are a non-resident selling more than NOK 5,000 back at the airport office, you will need to show the kroner were obtained in Norway, so keep exchange receipts.

Oslo travel money FAQ
Where is the best place to exchange money in Oslo?
FOREX, licensed by Finanstilsynet, has central shops at Jernbanetorget 1 by Oslo S (weekdays 08:00 to 21:00, Saturdays 09:00 to 19:00) and Karl Johans gate 2 (weekdays 09:00 to 18:00, Saturdays 10:30 to 18:00); both close on Sundays. Weigh their kroner against a debit-card withdrawal.
Can I change money at Oslo Airport?
Yes, at the Loomis office at ground level in the arrivals hall (06:00 to 22:00 daily), provided your flight is to or from outside Norway. Take ID and travel details; the daily limit is NOK 25,000. FOREX has no outlet there, but cash machines stand in arrivals.
Can I pay cash on Oslo trams and buses?
On buses and boats only: Ruter sells singles on board for cash, at a higher price and with no notes above NOK 200. Trams and the metro sell no tickets on board, so buy in the Ruter app or at a kiosk first. A zone 1 adult single costs NOK 46.
